How to be a Crochet Pattern Tester
I have a confession… I never tested someone’s pattern before. But, I wondered what the process is like from the eyes of a crochet pattern tester. So, I interviewed two of my friends who are always busy testing just to get some more insight on the whole process of crochet testing.
But let’s quickly talk about what a crochet pattern tester is. A pattern tester is someone who agrees to crochet the item from a written crochet pattern for a crochet designer. This is to look over the pattern, assess the fit of the pattern and give any recommendations or notes to the designer. This helps the designer by having extra eyes to look over their patterns and the testers get to enjoy being a part of the design process of their favorite designers.
These interviews give a lot of insight into the process of pattern testing. I think this info is helpful for both testers and designers to understand from an experienced tester’s point of view. New testers should find these tips especially helpful, and designers also need to understand how to work with testers. Pattern testing is a great way to increase your crochet skills by working with designers you like. And the designers have to opportunity to have their pattern looked over, gain photos and publicity. So, let me introduce you to Justine and Rachel who are very experienced testers.

How long have you been a crocheter?
Just over 1 yr
How long have you been a crochet tester?
Since May 2021
How did you get your first pattern test?
FROM YOU! HAHA I started testing through having a friend who designs crochet outfits, and from there I gained the confidence to apply to test for other designers.
How can someone get started as a tester?
I think the most important partnership of pattern testing is time management. Set yourself up with a schedule that you can keep in front of you, where you keep track of the projects you’re currently working. Don’t overcoming yourself because deadlines can be very overwhelming, and the designers rely on your feedback/photos to finalize patterns before a release date.
Another important part of pattern testing is showing off your work! The more you model your projects, the easier it is for designers to see the quality of your work.
It can also be helpful to follow and interact with pattern testers who have similar interests to you. Most of us post “tester calls” that we see on the IG feed, so that’s another way to have opportunities pop up.
What is proper etiquette for testers?
Pay attention to what the designer wants from you in terms of feedback, and your deadline and follow those.
People in the crochet community are very friendly, and I’ve never had any issues but I’d say that in terms of etiquette — with designers, keep your communication professional and concise; with other testers, treat them the same way you would a new friend.
Also, a lot of designers will form a group chat. Etiquette in the group chat that I try to follow is simply be supportive and engaging when you can, share pics as you feel called and ask questions when you need to.
What do you expect from the designer? What are the best qualities that you like when working with a designer?
When I’m pattern testing I like designers who are engaging with the group, and who keep us on track. For example, as we approach a deadline some designers will send out the feedback forms and it can be a good reminder to pick up the pace, or an easy way to stay ahead.
My favorite designers are people who I feel comfortable talking to. It can be really intimidating to show your work and then model it as well, so building a working friendship with designers is nice.
What are your most favorite pattern tests?
My favorite tests have been:

Ariel Dress by Muto Crochet (which I’m technically still not done, she’s been very patient about timing because it’s a big project)

Pick 1 thing that’s the most important advice to a new tester?
Just go for it, but be honest about what you can get done especially if you are working in a formal job.
Pick 1 thing that’s the most important advice to a new designer who wants to start working with testers?
Wow, that’s a great question.
I would say to be sure you give a generous deadline, especially if your garment is inclusive for beginners. You want to make sure your testers have plenty of time to complete a quality garment for you to advertise.
Also, send out a reminder the day before pattern release day. Some testers are pattern testing full time, so it can be helpful to have the heads up right before your pattern is released.
I’ve never really encountered a poorly written pattern. But I’d encourage designers to try making a garment using ONLY the instructions written.
Anything you want to add?
It’s exciting to see so many people sharing their unique designs and ideas! Keep up the great work everybody.

How long have you been a crocheter?
I learned to crochet when I was about 7 years old but only really got into it about 11 years ago when I was taking care of an elderly woman and had a lot of time on my hands.
How long have you been a crochet tester?
I started testing about 7 years ago.
How did you get your first pattern test?
I think I came across someone on Facebook. I think one of the designers I followed must have asked for help testing. I didn’t even know there was such a thing as a pattern tester 😂😂😂
How can someone get started as a tester?
Just start applying! Take that leap and apply for one of your favorite designers. Look for people who are just starting out as designers and don’t have the largest followings too. Once you get into a testing group, make friends with the other testers and ask them to let you know when they hear about other tests. Learn all that you can in every test you get accepted for.
What is proper etiquette for testers?
Pay attention to what the designer is asking for. Don’t apply if you can’t meet their requirements. If they don’t state specifics (like yarn weight, yarn type, extra items needed like buttons, elastic, etc, and very specifically the due date) ASK. Then make sure you meet those requirements. If something does come up while testing, communicate. Communicate even if nothing comes up! Be actively involved in the test group.
What do you expect from the designer? What are the best qualities that you like when working with a designer?
I expect that a designer wants feedback, first and foremost. If a designer really just wants you to say it’s all good, it’s not going to go very well. A tester is there to actually help figure out the problems. It’s in no way an attack on the pattern or the designer, it’s honest questions and help. I also expect respectful communication. Thankfully I’ve never run into a designer who is disrespectful or rude .. but I know testers who have. I can’t even imagine! I expect that a designer will make themselves available for questions and/or create a group chat where testers can help each other with tricky parts. Lastly, I expect that a designer will provide a final copy of the pattern to each tester. It’s going above and beyond to offer an extra pattern for the time and help given. But that’s a really nice touch and always makes a big impression.
What are your most favorite tests that you’ve done?
Oh goodness!! I love every test I’ve done!

Pick 1 thing that’s the most important advice to a new tester?
Enjoy it! Don’t worry too much if you don’t get chosen for a test. Just keep applying. When you *do* get chosen, enjoy every moment!
Pick 1 thing that’s the most important advice to a new designer who wants to start working with testers?
Don’t be afraid of feedback. No one is going to criticize your work. If they didn’t already love it, they wouldn’t apply. Trust that they really are there to help you put out the very best pattern possible.

Love you to pieces Charde! This is a great topic for a blog post and I hope it’s well received by testers and designers alike.
