Crochet Kitty Hat Pattern Free

I have been trying to design a cute cartoon hat for a while and I initially wanted to make a unicorn hat. It was to be a gift for my niece. But once I realized I don’t have any amigurumi experience, that horn went out the window. So, I finally settled on making a crochet kitty hat. And I was just going to make it and not record it or write the pattern but once it turned out to be cute, I went ahead and finished writing this pattern to share with you! I hope you enjoy this crochet kitty hat pattern free! You can find other free patterns listed on Charde Crochets Blog here. Below is a good video of the hat so you can see it more in detail so click below.
Crochet Kitty Hat Sizes
I designed this hat for children in two sizes. The first size is for children between 3-5 years old which measures about 6.5″ from the crown to the bottom of the hat. The second size is for children 6-10 years old and is about 7″ from the crown to the bottom of the hat. The sizes will be shown in the pattern as follows: 3-5 years old (6-10 years old)
Materials
- 5 mm Hook
- Medium Weight 4 Yarn (I used 6 colors, but you can change this color combo to your liking)
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle
Color Combination Shown

This is the color combo I used. But feel free to be creative with your own colors. Colors C, D, E and F are from my scrap yarn pile that I put in balls for random accent colors. I used Color F where I would have used Color A just because I wanted some metallic sparkle white in the hat. But all of the Color F spots could have been Color A. But if the base of your hat is not white, you might go through and change the places where you change colors so that this works for you. All of these yarns are found at Hobby Lobby.
- A – I Love This Yarn – White
- B – Sparkle Metallic I Love This Yarn – Pinky Toes

Sew Together
So now we have all the crochet parts made and it’s time to sew our crochet kitty hat together!

*** Sew nose to base. Sew both reflections to each of the eyes as you prefer. Sew finished ears, eyes and nose/base to hat as shown below.

Add Embroidery and Braids
So now you can add any embroidery to your crochet kitty hat that you would like to. I used Color D, the metallic black yarn. I am very new to embroidery with yarn when it comes to faces, so I did a mouth as best as I could lol. But you can make the mouth your own to give the kitty a different look, or you can do a mouth similar to mine. You can also add whiskers and eyelashes if you like as well.

Lastly let’s add the braids. I cut 12 strands that were 20 inches long. I used 6 strands for each earflap. You can either mix colors or use one color. I used 3 of my accent colors. You can use more strands if you would like a thicker braid. You can also cut longer strands if you like. Keep in mind that the strands are folded in half and braids shorten the strands a bit. So my braids ended up being about 8 inches after I cut the bottom to even out the tassel.

Once you have your strands cut, you will tie 6 strands to each ear flap. Fold the strands in half and use a hook to pull the middle through the hole in the earflap (from the inside) to create a loop. Then pull the strands through the loop keeping the strands as even as possible. Repeat for the second earflap.

Now braid the strands, using 4 strands in each leg of the braid. Finally tie a knot at the bottom of the braid. This will secure your braid and give you a tassel at the bottom. Make sure your second braid’s knot lines up with the first braid’s. Finally, you will cut the tassels so that they are even with each other.

And now we are finished with our crochet kitty hat! I hope you enjoyed this free pattern!
